Enthalpy can easily be used to determine the output of a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump.

Enthalpy (btu/lb dry air) is typically derived from reading a psychrometric chart. This quick table allow the technician to measure wet bulb temperature in a supply or return air stream and quickly convert it to enthalpy or total heat.

If the change in enthalpy is know and the CFM measured accurately, the capacity of a furnace or air conditioner can easily be calculated. For total heat the formula is:

Total Heat (Btuh) = 4.5 x CFM x change in Enthalpy

Sensible Heat (Btuh) = 1.08 x CFM x change in temperature

The latent heat can be found by subtracting the sensible heat from the total heat or the formula:

Latent Heat (Btuh) = .68 x CFM x change in grains

Grains moisture is is determined also by the psychrometric chart.

Some additional notes for conversion......

12,000 Btu/ton

3.414 Btu/watt

1000 watts/Kw

So...

60,000 btuh = 5 tons/hr = 17,575 watts/hr = 17.575 kw/h

This is about the amount of heat that a 75,000 btuh 80+ furnace produces (17.575 kw/h) also
