Why buy the 556 over the 550? Good question! Are you commissioning systems or performacne testing them? While it cannot be argued that 550 is light years ahead of typical gauges and thermometers, it is still considered a field grade digital product. The intent of the 550 is to replace traditional manifold gauges sets and provide higher accuracy during the charging and commissioning process. The 550 and the 556 both eliminate inherent errors of using analog instrumentation. However the 556 making the same measurements can provide financial grade information. This is information decisions can be made on for utility and energy auditing programs. The Testo 556 has 50% higher accuracy than the 550 with pressure transducers that are rated at .5% full scale versus .75%, higher temperature accuracy, faster response, data logging and storage capability, printing capability, and it can also be interfaced with Get-Cool software to aid in diagnostics and gathering data. Simply put, the 550 is field grade instrumentation, and the 556 has lab accuracy for use in the field. Additional features include IP 54 rating for water resistance, 4 ports, wireless upgrade capability, and much more.

Refrigeration system analyzer testo 556-1, with 2 pipe wrap probes, EasyKool software and case. This basic kit is designed specifically for data logging refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Two temperature probes allow monitoring of superheat and subcooling at the same time, information can be streamed in real-time to a PC or down loaded directly to the 556 and reviewed at a later time.

556/560 Technology Overviews

It has been four years since the US introduction of the first generation of Testo refrigeration products. The new generation of the Testo line of refrigeration system analyzers (RSAs) will continue to change the way the HVAC/R world troubleshoots, commissions and services A/C & refrigeration systems. Although the first generation of refrigerant products was highly successful, Testo has listened to customers desires to develop a product line with the diversity to meet your most demanding applications. Testo has completely retooled and reworked the refrigeration product design from the hook, which is now a quick locking carbineer, to a backlit sight glass that aids in refrigerant recovery allowing the technician to see when the last drops of liquid refrigerant are removed. Larger valve handles that can be recessed or extended make it easier for large or small hands to operate the gauge porting, and valves that can be field serviced or replaced without the need for special tools. Leading the refrigeration industry in innovative technology, Testo will again surpass your expectations in digital refrigeration technology. The next generation has incorporated a long list of new features that will increase measurement accuracy, reduce equipment-servicing time, and provide a means of tamper proof field verification, while streamlining field operations. Added this year in all instruments is the ability to print the measurement results on site via wireless printer, high stability ceramic relative pressure transducers, a large backlit display and sight glass, and intuitive user operation. Four valve design with a 3/8-evacuation port. High durability valve handles with Teflon seats, hose holder with integrated LCD protection, data logging and wireless temperature sensor capability. Also incorporated into the 560 is a precision vacuum sensor that reads in microns, hg, or Pascals of pressure. With its data storage capabilities USB output, real-time graphic capabilities in the online mode, joined with the superior accuracy, no other product made can compete at any level.

Superheat and Subcooling Measurement

Thirty on board temperature pressure charts provide unparalleled detail and accuracy of refrigerant saturation temperatures, superheat and subcooling. Unlike traditional paper charts no interpolation of the temperature-pressure relationship is required. It is now possible to measure and set superheat and subcooling with laboratory accuracy in the field as the Testo 523 reads pressures and temperatures to the tenth of a psi and tenth of a degree and automatically calculates real-time superheat and subcooling values. Temperature measurement is just as critical as pressure when commissioning and servicing equipment.

Temperature

The platinum based (platinum film on a ceramic substrate) 4-wire construction, of the spring loaded temperature sensor (Pt-100) has a very low mass (yielding a fast response) and is not affected by stray voltages that may be present on the refrigeration equipment. Unlike traditional K-type thermocouples, the sensor is electrically isolated from the RSA. Isolating the temperature sensor electrically from the system eliminates the possibility of incorrect temperature measurement resulting from stray electrical currents or ghost voltages often present on improperly grounded refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Because the resistance of a Pt100 sensor bears an absolute relationship to temperature (unlike a thermocouple whose output depends on the difference between the hot junction and cold junction) no special compensating circuit needs to be provided in the electronics. In short, the Pt100 has a wide operating range, excellent accuracy, good linearity, excellent physical strength, long-term stability, and is the preferred sensor for all industrial processes where accuracy and repeatability are required. Additionally, Pt100 probes may be replaced without recalibration of the RSA instruments. Sensors are available in lengths up to 40 feet. The Velcro-elastic strap provides insulation from ambient air along with positive contact to the refrigeration line from " to 3" in diameter. Air and immersion probes are available to further enhance your testing applications.

Time

Incorporated into the system analyzer is a new dimension; time. The entire new generation of RSA products incorporates a real time clock that permits accurate documentation of the time and date readings were recorded via the wireless printer or data logging. Testo was first-to-market with a complete line of refrigeration system analyzers that incorporate data logging, and now the first to bring wireless printing to the complete line. Owners of Testo combustion or other test equipment that already use a wireless printer will benefit from cost savings, as the printer is universal to all Testo products. A printout of the final operating parameters on all RSA products allows for field documentation of operating at system startup or pre and post operation.

Data Acquisition (Standard)

Testo was first-to-market with a complete line of refrigeration system analyzers that incorporate data logging, and now the first to bring wireless printing to the complete line. Owners of Testo combustion airflow or other test equipment that already use a wireless printer will benefit from cost savings, as the printer is universal to all Testo products. Long life paper assures your records will last. Because the printer is thermal, there is no ink to replace or printer ribbon to ever install. Data logging (556/560) allows the service technician and or system analyst to evaluate system performance over a period of time from a single snapshot to 1000s of points over days with easy to use software and 60,000 points of data. If desired power can be supplied via a 120V supply for long term monitoring to assure data acquisition. If main power is interrupted due to an outage, the system will revert to batteries power and back again once power is restored. Streaming data in to a PC in the online mode allows the technician to spot trends such as hunting, flooding, solenoids leaking, high or low-pressure trips, monitor box temperatures, space temperature, defrosts, humidity, oil pressure or current. Data logging eliminates babysitting on problem jobs working while your not there. Additionally data logs become an invaluable training tool as all of your technicians can see what the problem was and discuss the solution.

Refrigerant Management (Scale Accessory)

With the extensive number or refrigerants available today, and EPA compliance, refrigerant billing and record keeping is costly to company owners and customers. Many digital scales do not have high repeatability and or are subject to drift away from their zero point over time. Under billing or over billing customers for refrigerant can be costly. If your compliance records are ever audited, accurate records of refrigerant in and out of systems will be critical to the outcome. With this in mind, the scale accessory has been specifically designed to combat these problems. The Testo scale accessory allows for accurate record keeping and accurate refrigerant management by recording the precise amount of refrigerant added or removed from a system. A digital printout of the refrigerant added via the wireless printer serves as a documented record of the refrigerant used or removed while installing commissioning or servicing.

Oil Pressure (accessory)

Lubrication problems caused by oil dilution, oil migration, pump failure or oil loss can cause a host of problems and result in premature failure of the compressor or nuisance lockouts of the oil pressure control. Partial loading of compressors and piping problems lead to poor oil return and oil pressure tripping. By use of a separate oil pressure transducer, oil pressure can be monitored along side coil temperatures, pressures, superheat and subcooling to track down and resolve nuisance oil pressure problems.

Current Measurement (accessory)

Operating current provides tell tale information about compressor operation Measuring current can help identify problems with excessive current, internal or external overload operation, excessive current at startup, liquid flooding, excessive run times, high pressure trips, short cycling, locked rotor or open circuits. With manufacturers information, the compressor amps along with suction and discharge pressures can be used to evaluate compressor performance. Long or short term monitoring of theses problems will aid the technician in making a quick and accurate diagnosis of system problems.

Wireless Capability (accessory)

The Testo 556/560 are both upgradeable to wireless temperature capability. Wireless technology will enable temperature measurement from remote locations for calculation of evaporator superheat at an outdoor condenser, monitoring of return and supply air temperatures from outside, Remote monitoring of case temperatures in refrigeration systems, or a remote outdoor air temperature. The wireless probes and the built in temperature probes can be assigned as needed for a number of field applications. Wireless humidity capabilities further complements the measuring process allowing measurement and documentation of space humidity or box humidity for refrigeration systems or produce coolers.

Wireless Interchangeability

Owners of other Testo wireless products including wireless temperature and humidity instruments can use the wireless module and or probes interchangeably if desired without additional purchase expense. All Testo wireless products use the same RF technology keeping wireless technology compatible and affordable. Each probe has a unique RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and a high low frequency switch that allows users to map the wireless probes to the instrument to perform specific functions or calculations like evaporator superheat, total superheat or subcooling.

Data Management

Wireless printing is standard in all models of the new generation of refrigeration analyzers. All measured and calculated parameters can quickly be field documented without error in seconds. Pre and post measurements allow for documentation of as found and final performance. System commissioning on new startups or major component repairs like compressor replacement are easily documented for the office and the customer or the factory in warranty situations. The most significant advantages of data management and analysis are apparent when data from a Testo 556/560 is read, analyzed and managed in the Testo PC Software. It is now possible for the technician designer, engineer, service manager, or a lead technician to spot trends, benchmark systems, verify proper/design operation, provide streaming real-time system operation to a manufacturer or other interested party in an tamperproof data format that can be graphed to provide a digital window into the refrigeration/air conditioning system. In the online mode, system high and low side pressures, saturation pressures, measured temperatures, along with superheat and subcooling can be viewed on an auto-scaling graph in a real time format. All measurements or each individual measurement can be viewed at once. System hunting, erratic operation, or other trends can be quickly spotted and documented using the optional software. Refrigeration technicians can monitor operation over a 24-hour period or longer insuring proper operation of newly commissioned systems prior to loading the box, or spot problems like excessive run time and evaporator temperature due to an open cooler door providing air conditioning for a night crew in the kitchen.

Built in Temperature Pressure Charts

Built in reference table for 30 refrigerants allows the user to look at temperatures and pressures with resolution to the tenth of a degree and or PSI. Temperature pressure charts are normally shown with respect to sea level With the 556/560, if desired, the altitude can be input for any elevation above or below sea level to adjust the chart for current elevations. Because most mechanical and electronic manifolds reference pressures with respect to sea level, altitude compensation on temperature pressure charts is critical to achieve the high accuracy possible with the 556/560, on low temp or critical applications including refrigeration, cryogenic refrigeration, transport refrigeration, freeze drying, critical evaporator control for box temperature or precise dew point and/or humidity control.

Altitude Compensation

The Testo 556/560 incorporates altitude compensation for the refrigerant temperature pressure charts with regard to sea level. Traditional methods of charging at elevations above sea level required high altitude charts often hard to acquire, and requiring interpolation as often the technician is working between 2000 and 10,000 feet or in some cases below sea level. With the 556/560, altitude can be adjusted from -1650 to 16,500 feet above sea level in increments as small as 1 foot. Altitude compensation not only corrects the temperature pressure charts but also the superheat and subcooling calculations as they are also based on the temperature pressure relationship.

The Testo 523digital refrigeration/air conditioning system analyzers are a multipurpose tool designed for every day use replacing a gauge manifold, superheat or subcooling thermometers, pressure-temperature charts, etc.. with a rugged hand held versatile tool.
